My name is David, I am 43 and I decided that it was time to put myself to a challenge. Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by strength and muscularity. I think it stems from the very first time I picked up a Hulk comic book when I was very young. I’ll never forget that time in my life.. I had a buddy who had 3 brothers and they had a shit load, I mean between the 3 of them, a shit load of comic books! It was comic book heaven!… And that’s how I fell in love with comic books and of course Hulk. It should come to no surprise that I never missed an episode of the TV series Hulk, with Bill Bixby (god rest his soul) and Lou Ferrigno (who I got to meet with my son at the montreal comic-con). Although I enjoyed both Hulk movies, I think the Avengers movie got it right and finally did the hulk character justice; including Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner.
This continued interest with strength carried over into high school. My gym teacher at the time had an after school weight training program which was open to students… Well, atleast to most students. You see, I grew on the small side and he refused me on that ground alone! Discrimination, I tell you 😉 ! Apparently I didn’t have the body type. Too bad. Of course, the minute I hit college, bam ! Gym time. I actually spent a lot of time at the gym. I would say I averaged 5-6 times a week for many, many years. Boy, when I look back at that time, it is insane how much money I spent on these ‘health’ products to help me get bigger (I practically lived at GNC)… All because I didn’t want to take the path of steroids. A lot of wasted money, I tell you. The only thing I have been faithful to has been protein shakes. It is at the gym that I eventually met my wife; another gym rat. I trained pretty regularly even after marriage… But then slowly but surely the priorities changed… The family grew; son now 13 and daughter now 10, so gym life took a back seat for many years. As the kids got older, I was able to return to the gym and I have been able to maintain a reasonable gym going rate of 2-3 times/week. It’s not the best but better than zero… Of course, unless I don’t go all week which happens from time to time!
A little over a month ago, a friend of mine told me she was training for a bikini contest. I found that to be so inspiring I wanted to do the same… No, not enter a bikini contest but put myself to a challenge; a personal one. I figure I am not in that bad a shape… So can I change my body in 30 days? That is, can I change my body for the better in 30 days? I figured, easy enough, right? Well, that was over 30 days ago… Life (and by life I mean soccer) got in the way and I haven’t been able to get consistently going.. Until now.. We have a few weeks off from soccer and it should give me an opportunity to get this going. I think I will take the approach of one day at a time and hopefully after 30 there is an improvement. Otherwise it will be another 30 and so on and so on.. Until I am satisfied 🙂 !
I should mention I coach competitive youth soccer, another passion of mine, and it makes summer time an incredibly busy time for me… it has been tough to get motivated to go to gym after practice and/or game days… Something that I have to work on…motivating myself.
Alright so let’s do this! David SMASH!
